The 2011 Biotech Humanitarian Award will recognize an individual who has made a difference in the effort to heal, fuel or feed the planet through his or her work in biotechnology. Previous nominees include scientists, researchers, academics, entrepreneurs, financiers and philanthropists. The 2011 honoree will be announced at the 2011 BIO International Convention. The annual Deal of the Year awards recognize transactions by life sciences companies in Georgia that are significant to the industry's development. The recipients will receive their awards at the GaBio Annual Awards Dinner January 20, 6 pm to 9 pm, at Atlanta’s Fox Theater. Here is a link to register.

Alimera Sciences of Alpharetta, a biopharmaceutical company that specializes in the research, development and commercialization of prescription ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, and is dedicated to developing innovative, vision-improving treatments for diseases of the retina.
Arbor Pharmaceuticals of Atlanta, which intends to become a leading specialty pharmaceutical company by actively licensing, developing and commercializing late-stage products for specialty focused conditions.
CardioMEMS of Atlanta, a medical device company that has developed and is commercializing a proprietary wireless sensing and communication technology for the human body. The technology platform is designed to improve the management of severe chronic cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and aneurysms.
Carticept Medical of Alpharetta, a medical device company established in 2005 to develop and market innovative solutions for patients with osteoarthritis or cartilage damage.
Dendreon of Seattle, a biotechnology company focused on targeting cancer by applying its expertise in antigen identification, engineering and cell processing to produce active cellular immunotherapy (ACI) product candidates designed to stimulate an immune response in battling the disease.
Invasc Therapeutics of Tucker, a biopharmaceutical company formed to develop several platforms of drugs to combat chronic kidney and cardiometabolic diseases.
NeurOp of Atlanta, a biopharmaceutical company developing new medicines to treat central nervous system disorders, including major depression, neuropathic pain, ischemia, schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease.

NCI SBIR Launches New Pilot Regulatory Assistance Program

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs announced the launch of a new pilot Regulatory Assistance Program. This first-ever NCI SBIR Regulatory Assistance Program is designed to aid NCI SBIR & STTR Phase II awardees in navigating the regulatory path. The program is part of the NCI’s latest efforts to go beyond funding support and help small businesses bring innovative cancer products to market to ultimately help in the fight against cancer. This competitive program is open to NCI Phase II grantees and contractors with projects that are current, or have ended within the last two years.

Applications will be accepted and reviewed on an on-going basis until 5:00 pm EST, February 4, 2011. Final selection of participants will be made by March 4, 2011.

Once selected, the awardees will be matched with experienced regulatory consultants in the areas of therapeutic and device development who will assist them in creating a comprehensive regulatory plan aimed at optimizing each company’s movement through the FDA approval process.

The industry accounts for 62,000 jobs, $3.6 billion in labor income and $517 million in tax revenues ...but we’re not there yet.

It was the kind of blockbuster news that gave hope to the dying, a bullish revelation that sent stock prices soaring. After decades of theorizing and testing and coming up with mostly nothing, medical scientists found a way of stimulating the body’s immune system to attack cancer cells and prevent the disease from recurring.

The company that makes this revolutionary immunotherapy drug, Seattle-based Dendreon, wants to be in Georgia – in Union City – and it will spend a lot of money and create hundreds of jobs for the privilege. Dendreon made the announcement a few months after Atlanta hosted the world’s largest gathering of biotech professionals, the 2009 BIO International Convention.

“It’s part of the ripple effect of hosting that convention,” says Charlie Craig, president of Georgia Bio, the nonprofit association that represents the state’s life science industry, with 300 members, including companies, universities, government groups and other industry associations.

Bioscience Commercialization Center Will Assist Entrepreneurs

An 86-acre biotech park proposed near Lake Oconee could create up to 500 jobs and lure drug development startups and biotech manufacturers from the West Coast.

Rock Eagle Science Technology Park, which could cost more than $150 million, is part of a 1,250-acre mixed-use development in Putnam County that includes a high school and will include housing and retail.

Following the release of a report entitled, “A New Biology for the 21st Century,” by the National Academies on the future of biological science, three of the study's authors discuss the key findings on video. This report identified how biology can help meet challenges like feeding a growing population, providing adequate health care, generating energy to meet increasing demands, and coping with global climate change.

In this video, Dr. Phillip Sharp (IBB Distinguished Lecturer in 2009), Dr. Anthony Janetos, and Dr. Keith Yamamoto explain the study's goals and conclusions.

On page 64 of the report, IBB was cited as one of two examples in the country that has successfully recognized the “limitation of traditional departmental structures for establishing the New Biology, and have responded not by eliminating departmental structures, but rather by supplementing or overlaying them with interdisciplinary programs and institutes that have both research and educational objectives.”

Augusta, MCG lobby with Biotech Industry

Georgia's profile as a place for biotech industry was raised overseas by an international convention in Atlanta and ongoing collaborations with foreign universities. Now, it is time to take advantage, the president of Georgia BIO and Medical College of Georgia leaders said.

Biotech leaders met with MCG and the Augusta community and business leaders Wednesday and Thursday to talk about further collaborations. It was a chance for MCG to show off some of its prowess and its opportunities for investment, MCG leaders said.

"I think it's a great opportunity to take advantage of the extraordinary amount of good science that is going on here at MCG," said MCG Interim President James N. Thompson. "I've only been here six weeks and I have been wonderfully impressed with the quality of the science and the quality of the medical care."

With recent surges in funding from the National Institutes of Health, MCG is probably first among its 13 peer institutes in research funding, said D. Douglas Miller, dean of MCG School of Medicine. Of the $75 million, about a quarter of it is from nonfederal sources, something the school would like to increase, Dr. Miller said.

"What you have to do is be proactive to access private sector funding," he said. "You've got to say to them, we've got the better idea, we have the value-added proposition for you."
When companies are considering moving to Georgia, Augusta has to make its case, he said. "I think people tend to think of Atlanta in this context," Dr. Miller said. "In terms of bang for the buck, I think that Augusta is a far more compelling place to be. Plus, you can get around in Augusta."

There's no doubt Georgia and Georgia universities are on the minds of biotech companies after the 2009 BIO International Convention in May, said Charles Craig, president of Georgia BIO. "The message was that life sciences companies can be successful in Georgia because all of the ingredients are here for success," he said. About 85 percent of the existing life sciences industry in the state is in the Atlanta-Athens area. And that's where Augusta, and MCG, could come in.
"The biotech companies cluster around strong research universities because that is where the basic science is done," Mr. Craig said.

First Major Grant to Fund Laboratory Research Received by Gainesville State College

Gainesville State College (GSC) Awarded a $201,070 Grant from National Science Foundation

Gainesville, GA., September 17, 2009

The grant titled “Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI): Characterization of the Manganese Centers of Oxalate Oxidase from Ceriporipsis subvermispora, will integrate the excitement of laboratory-based scientific discovery into undergraduate education at GSC.

The grant is under the direction of Dr. Ellen Moomaw, GSC Assistant Professor of Chemistry and will advance the understanding of the relationship between protein structure and function while promoting teaching, learning, and training at GSC.

“This is the first major grant to fund laboratory research that GSC has received, and it brings GSC into a new relationship with the NSF,” said Moomaw, who has an extensive background as a research chemist. Moomaw worked in the private sector before returning to earn her PhD from the University of Florida and entering the teaching field.

The grant will provide funding over the next three years to study manganese centers of the enzyme oxalate oxidase. The grant funds will provide for supplies and several pieces of advanced instrumentation. Additionally, three to four GSC students will take part in research internships during each semester (including summer) of the next three years.

Georgia Bio Launches First Statewide Bioscience Education Website

Georgia Bio has launched www.georgiabioed.org, the state’s first website dedicated to disseminating information about bioscience-specific education and workforce development efforts. The site was designed to promote better communication among educators, students, and employers about bioscience careers, specialized training, educational opportunities, publications and other activities promoting life science education in the state.

A key function of the site is the Visiting Scientist Program, where Georgia Bio members can register online to be part of a volunteer corps to visit k-12 classrooms and speak about bioscience careers and their interests in science. Georgia Bio aims to develop a large pool of potential volunteers to tap into as outreach opportunities arise during the school year. Registrants can specify their personal preferences for student age, school location, availability and topics. Educators similarly can contact Georgia Bio online to request a visit from a science professional, and Georgia Bio will match the request to one of its volunteers in the database, and then contact the volunteer to schedule.

The new bioscience education website provides a critical connection the educational community with Georgia’s life science industry to bring more awareness of careers and the relevance of science directly to students. The goal is to obtain participation from at least one employee in each of Georgia Bio’s member organizations in the Visiting Scientist database, bringing a wide variety of careers which use science – ranging from attorneys to customer service to sales and research – into Georgia’s classrooms.

The 2009 BIO International Convention winds down today, and for many of us it has been a memorable experience. In the days ahead, we hope you will share your stories by posting comments on the Georgia Bio Blog and sending us your photos.

For me, one of the highlights was the world’s first diversity summit in biotechnology on Monday, May 18, at the Omni Hotel. About 250 people registered to attend the summit and interact with more than 20 speakers from across the nation who gathered to talk about workforce diversity in the healthcare and biotechnology industries and about narrowing the gap in healthcare disparities among minority groups. Among the Georgia speakers were Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin; Dr. Louis Sullivan, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary; U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson; Morehouse School of Medicine Dean Dr. Eve Higginbotham; and Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer for the American Cancer Society.

The 2009 BIO International Convention is on track to be an outstanding event. We have top global biotech leaders, great keynoters, an exciting exhibition, and a highly active business forum.

We continue to monitor closely information and guidance from federal and international agencies concerning the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak in the United States. We remain committed to providing our attendees with timely travel advisories and other information. We also are preparing to take any actions that may be recommended by appropriate health authorities to enhance the safety of our attendees. We will post updated information as it becomes available.

There are currently no travel restrictions to the U.S. by the World Health Organization (WHO). The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, "H1N1 flu should not discourage people from traveling to or within the United States." '

We encourage attendees and our exhibitors to follow the advice of public health professionals. Experts note the simplest safeguards, such as washing hands and using disinfectants, can be among the most effective. WHO and CDC have recommended precautions to protect from spread of the virus.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization's (BIO) annual International Conference will take place in Atlanta this year on May 18–21. The conference committee made its decision to hold the meeting in Atlanta based on a number of factors. For example, Georgia’s life science community is a mix of companies applying life science technologies to improving medicine, healthcare, agriculture, industrial and energy production, forestry, marine science, and environmental management. There are more than 300 life science companies in the state, most focused on healthcare applications, ranging from established to start-up pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostic, medical supply, and medical informatics companies as well as contract laboratories and preclinical and clinical research organizations.

A Best Practices Day, part of the Conference on Biotechnology Education, will be held May 17 in conjunction with the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta. Georgia Bio congratulates Amy Martin, science teacher and department head at Creekview High School in Woodstock, Georgia. Ms. Martin is one of ten finalists announced this week for the Genzyme-Life Technologies Biotech Educator Award, the nation's top recognition for biotechnology education.

Established in 2004 by the Biotechnology Institute and co-sponsored by Genzyme Corporation and Life Technologies Corporation, the award identifies outstanding biotechnology Teacher-Leaders who have participated in the Institute's National Biotechnology Teacher-Leader Program. These teachers represent a premier group of biotechnology teachers who bring the excitement, promise, and cutting-edge research of biotechnology to their classrooms.

Georgia Bio sponsored Ms. Martin's participation in the Teacher-Leader program in 2008 in San Diego.

Sir Elton John to Deliver Keynote Address at 2009 BIO International Convention

Washington, D.C. [March, 11, 2009] – The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) announced today that Sir Elton John will be a keynote speaker at the 2009 BIO International Convention. This year's global event for biotechnology will take place on May 18-21, 2009, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

Sir Elton John is scheduled to speak at noon on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. He will focus on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, how biotechnology has influenced prevention and treatment of the disease and an outlook of the challenges and solutions that lie ahead.

"For many years, we have been deeply impressed by Sir Elton John's long-standing commitment to the fight against AIDS and his efforts to raise money for HIV/AIDS charitable organizations since the mid-1980's,”said BIO President and CEO James C. Along with BIO staff, volunteers are essential to the success of the convention. For each day you volunteer during the 2009 convention, you will receive a complimentary day to attend the conference. BIO is asking all participants to volunteer for two days. For each two days volunteered, you will receive two complimentary days to attend the conference (the complimentary passes are non-transferable; only 1 of the 3 evening receptions are included; and luncheon keynotes are included if they fall on a volunteer’s free day).
